A Back Pain Story

I want to share a story of how a man was saved from having unnecessary back surgery…

Recently, we treated a gentleman in his mid 50’s who was recommended to us through a past patient (We love your referrals!).

He came to us with low back pain that started several weeks prior during one of his normal high-intensity exercise sessions. He reported having such severe pain in his back and down his right leg that he didn’t know what to do. So he immediately went to the doctor who prescribed him medication and a referral to an orthopedic surgeon.

After being in agony for over a week he finally got into see his orthopedic doctor who ordered an x-ray and MRI.

Since this whole referral, appointment, new referral, appointment process can be long, especially when in pain, he tried several chiropractic treatments and injections during this process in an attempt to relieve the pain he was having every single day.

Although these treatments gave him mild improvements in pain he still didn’t have improvements in leg numbness.

Finally, the MRI’s came back revealing a bulged disc along with arthritis.

He met with his surgeon once again and, of course, the surgeon advised that surgery would be the only fix for the back pain and leg numbness.

After reluctantly agreeing he scheduled a lumbar fusion surgery 2 month later. While leaving the doctors office and feeling hopeless, confused and frustrated the patient decided to do his own research and ask around for advice.

Fortunately, a close friend of his recommended he try Impact Physical Therapy prior to having any type of surgery. Feeling skeptical and unsure, which is totally understandable, the patient made 1 appointment to try it out.

After a 1 hr assessment and treatment with one of our therapists, the patient’s back symptoms were significantly diminished and his leg numbness was reduced!

After seeing such immediate changes and really not wanting to undergo surgery, he booked 6 more appointments and went all in on physical therapy as the solution for his pain.

And guess what?

After 6 visits of focused physical therapy, his back pain was gone and the numbness in his leg was minimal.

And even more important that avoiding surgery, he was able to resume his normal physical activity and get back to living a pain-free life.

Speeding ahead to several weeks later and the patient had canceled his surgery and is now back running, lifting weights and working with no issues.

Sadly, this story is not uncommon and typically goes the other direction…

If it wasn’t for his friend that recommended physical therapy he would have had surgery, paid thousands of dollars, missed weeks of work, and subjected his body to possible complications.
